Ultimately they'll always rip you off, but some will take much longer to rip you off than others.
I'll make a silly but truthful example.
Say you lend $50 to each of your friends and only half will give it back to you.
Out of that half, (now that you trust them) you now lend $3000 each, and only three will give you the money back.
Now you have three real good friends, so you can next time lend them $50.000 each and sadly, nobody will give you the money back.
Now you know that they were $3000 friends but not $50.000.
Since you are possibly poor, you can't do this so you'll never find out the true value of your friends, but everyone has a price.
One will always be able to turn a good friend into a traitor with the use of money/power.
However, there was a King of England that stepped down from being a king in order to marry his american commoner lover.
So he was a true friend. Mind you, it isn't as if he lost all his money doing that, he still led a very easy life so perhaps he was looking after his interests after all.
